The Five Starter Moves series moves into audio and video today, and whether your organization is ready for that yet.
Getting your organization into more than just listening to the social sphere and blogging is not always the right move. Using these other media CAN be time consuming, and the return on the effort is sometimes questionable. And yet, audio and video connect someone much more powerfully than just the printed word. It is with these tools that your clients, customers, partners, and colleagues can see the human behind the organization. This is at once scary and powerfully wonderful.
In our Five Starter Moves discussion so far, we’ve talked about framing the idea to our organization, and listening/hearing. Now, let’s talk about blogging.
I ask this question because I believe most people advising organizations about social media go straight for a blog as their first option. I’m going to step out and say that maybe a blog ISN’T a good first choice. Why? Because I think that blogs are fairly substantial steps, and that an organization might feel really exposed if their first attempt at clearing their throat is an A Cappella moment on stage in front of thousands.

It’s a lot of pushing and shoving to show someone why they should use blogs, and heaven forbid you try to launch them into Twitter too soon. Instead, start with listening. It’s easier, and makes for a more compelling demo.
Companies are being pressured into the whole social media thing from lots of angles. They’re reading about it in mainstream press more often. Their PR agencies are asking them about it. Hell, PR agencies themselves are being pressured into getting into social media and social networking. But what does it mean? Where should one start?
I’ll break these five ideas out over a few posts, but will give you the whole thing in one tidy downloadable file when they’re all completed. Fair? Here goes the first one:
