My 3 Words for 2013

chrisbrogan · January 1, 2013 ·

Every year, I choose three words to help focus my goals and efforts.

Disney Dream Christening Voyage

In an effort to tell bigger stories, I’ve found that the concept of three words allows me to think in more dimensions about what I want to do with my life and it lets me apply lots of tangible goals instead of what most people do when they focus on just a finite task. It’s a bit like turbo-charged goal planning. I’ll explain the process.

How 3 Words Fits Into Your Planning

If there were a hierarchy to planning out your year, it would look like this:

  • The big story.
  • Vision.
  • Goals.
  • Plans and Milestones.
  • The daily calendar.

You could argue which goes first, a vision or a big story. I’d accept either. But to me, a vision is a story told in goals, so I put it below the big story. The big story is that which we want to believe about our life and our goals and our plan. The vision is how you lay that out into something you can do. Goals are a way of knowing that you’re headed in the direction of your vision and your story. Plans and milestones are what make up goals, and if this doesn’t land on the calendar, you don’t have anything.

The three words are a shorthand representation of your bigger story. It’s kind of like how an icon isn’t the software program. It’s just a way for you to mentally access all the work you’re doing. Make sense?

How to Use the Three Words Concept

Think of three words that sum up what you want to work actionably on changing/improving in the coming year. It works best when the words are positive in spirit and not negative. For instance: “Fat” isn’t exactly a great word, but “Fit” would be better. Think of words that give you more than just a simple goal. For instance, instead of “fit,” I’d look to go with “athlete” or “marathon runner” or some person that connects you to those goals.

The idea is to look deeper than a single goal and try to give you an entire mindset to contemplate. The Heath Brothers in their book, Switch, talked about needing three elements to bring about change: a rider (your plans and intents), the elephant (what your mood will do no matter what your plans say), and the path (the environment within which you intend to implement those changes). The concept of the three words is like the path. Think of a word that gives you the HUGE picture, not the small picture.

My 3 Words Over the Years

For reference and more insight, here are the previous 3 Words posts:

2006 – Ask. Do. Share
2007 – Seek. Frame. Build. Bridge (yes, that was 4. It also was a less successful year.)
2008 – Believe. Loops.Farm
2009 – Equip. Armies. Needles
2010 – Ecosystems. Owners. Kings
2011 – Reinvest. Package. Flow
2012 – Temple. Untangle. Practice

And now…

My Three Words for 2013

Walt – as in Walt Disney. The concept I’m going to remember with this is multi-faceted. Walt believed in himself instead of worrying what others were saying. He was turned down for money to build Disney World around 500 times (all you Disney fans probably know the number by heart). But what I’m also going to remember with Walt was that he held tight to his vision, and he defined it so well that others were able to carry it on after his death. Legacy.

Ender – as in Ender Wiggin. The concepts tied into this is that Ender was a soldier, but a reluctant one. He had to learn how to be mentally tough, that complaining wasn’t all that effective, and that new ideas would face great resistance, even if they were correct. There’s a lot in this one, too. I seemed to go with multi-faceted words this year.

Monchu – it’s an Okinawan word that means something like “one family.” The idea is that you treat more people outside of your bloodline or your tribe as if they are family. This concept will remind me to work even harder on my connecting with value, my relationship-building, and my attention to people who matter to me. It’s probably the hardest one to put down simply, but that’s what I’ll be focusing on.

Rob Hatch’s 3 Words

I asked my business partner and COO, Rob Hatch, to tell me his three words for 2013 as well, and here’s what he said:

Systems – If 2012 revealed anything to me, it was the power of building a System for even the most simple aspects of my ilife. Systems are simply habits that I have borrowed, hacked, or designed to enable me to accomplish a goal, complete a project, or simply structure my life or work. Systems give me time, free me from worry, allow me to focus and present. They also serve as platforms for risk taking.
Service – Service is a reminder to both be of service to others and that my actions should serve my goals.
Now – Whatever my hopes, dreams or goals may be, What matters is what I do now. Whether that is doing the work in front of me or being present for the people I’m with. Now matters.

Business, How To

My 3 Words for 2012

chrisbrogan · January 1, 2012 ·

Happy New Year 2012!

Every year since around 2006, I’ve been challenging people to forego the idea of a resolution, and instead, to come up with 3 words that will help you define your goals and experiences for the coming year. Resolutions are often too vague, or too directed towards one goal. It might be “quit smoking” or “lose 20 pounds” or “get hired.” These are all fine aspirations, but I challenge you to dig deeper, to find three words that could be used as lighthouses to guide you through stormy seas, that can be used as flags on the battlefield of your challenges, words that will bolster you and give you a direction that goes beyond the goals you might attach as a result of these words.

This year, I’ve got a little something more, thanks to Jacqueline’s post. Now, not only will I stick to my three words, but I will use Jacq’s idea of #12in12 to execute on the meaning of those three words every month. I invite you to do the same. It really seems like the best way to stay very mindful of your 3 words and their place in your life.

My 3 Words for 2012

My three words for 2012 are:

Temple – I will treat my body like a temple, and in that, I have incorporated my fitness and nutrition goals, my sleep goals, my health goals, and all that I can do to improve my body so that I can be a much more successful person in 2012. My first #12in12 for this will be 31 days of yoga with Jacqueline, and also a return to 31 days of 80/20 paleo (I have a little bit of dairy). It will also impact what I consume for media, and how I spend my time.

Untangle – I will work from my own core. I will let neither praise nor criticism get in the way of my efforts. I will work from the strength of meditation and I will work from making sure that I’m driving my personal life, my business life, and all my other responsibilities from a clear and simple perspective. This also means that I will keep Human Business Works very sane and focused instead of all over the place. This also means I will stop acting like I have ADD, and I will focus on a few things and do those well, instead of a lot of things and just barely succeed.

Practice – The practice is the reward. The practice is the reward. Practice means that I will remember to do DAILY what needs doing. I will look at all of my larger efforts in life as the results of the work I accomplish through practice. I can’t be a sharp sword if I stay in the scabbard all the time. My days will be geared around practice. I refuse to just “wing it” in any aspects of my life any longer. And when I say that, I don’t mean that I’ll not allow for serendipity or leisure, but instead, that I will be much more mindful of how I can accomplish what needs doing, and that I will work towards those goals and interests in a way that affords me more success.

Temple. Untangle. Practice.

Compared to years past, this is a much more personal list of goals and words than before. But that’s what I need right now, and ultimately, it will be what drives me and my business (and my life) to success.

My 3 Words for 2011

chrisbrogan · January 1, 2011 ·

Every year, I come up with three words that will be my guiding pillars for what I will focus on in the coming year. Instead of resolutions, which don’t usually help me very much, I work hard on using these words as a lighthouse for my actions and efforts. Here are my 3 words for 2011:

Reinvest. Package. Flow.

Reinvest – I will reinvest in my efforts in all areas of life that matter to me. I won’t phone it in. I have some fitness goals. I can’t keep playing at it. I have some financial goals that will be met. I have community goals that require me to reinvest in my projects and not take on new things.
Package – I just wrote about packaging the other day. Essentially, I’m going to get my own marketing house in order. I’m going to make sure things make sense, make sure they are easy to understand, and make sure that the right people know about them. Packaging will have other meanings, too, but this one is important to me in 2011.
Flow – In the last few months of 2010, I came to realize that I’m still doing too much. I went into redrawing mode yet again. One thing I have to do much better in 2011 is manage flow: that state of working on the most important stuff and eliminating distractions. I’ve cut a lot out of my original plans for 2011. I’ll surely cut a little more. The end result? Things will come out much better. I’ll have less stress. Things will flow nicely.

3 Words Aren’t Goals

The three words idea is built so that you can have something to reflect upon. As you know, goals should be SMART ( Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely). The way you use the two together is that you think up goals that will match up to your words. For instance, one goal of mine in 2011 that ties to “reinvest” is to lose 50 pounds over 10 months. 5 pounds a month is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.
There you go.

How To Write Three Blog Posts A Day

chrisbrogan · November 15, 2010 ·

Some of us love to write. Some of us need rituals to get there. Others of us need to get “into the groove” (or the zone) to get writing. Some of us have a time of day to write. There are all these variables. And yet, if we’re looking to build content that drives business (or that advances our cause, or that informs our audience), then we have to get the work done when we can do it.

I write upwards of 4000 words a day on various projects. Currently, I’ve got way too many writing-based projects on my plate, but I like all of them, and can’t part with any of them just yet. Here’s how I get three blog posts out (minimum) a day.

How to Write Three Blog Posts a Day

First, let’s talk about environment and the whole “I can only write at such and such time of day” stuff. You have to break through that. That’s potentially true, but it isn’t a luxury you want to indulge. Instead, force yourself, a little at a time, to write when you have a moment. You’ve got to get past the “I need everything perfect and just so to write” feelings, too. In fact, there’s a lot of stuff you have to throw out, emotionally and preference-wise, before you can really start hitting your mark.
From there, let’s talk about tools.

Tools to Write Three Blog Posts a Day

Here are the tools that help me the most in writing three blog posts a day:

I keep a notepad in my back pocket all the time. I use my phone to take photos of interesting/curious things. I jot down ideas as they come to me, as often as possible. My notebooks are full of ideas for potential blog posts and for topics for later dates. I have hundreds and hundreds of ideas at the ready, in case I ever hit a wall.

Get your eyes into the habit of seeing things with curiosity. Get your ears perked up to eavesdrop and to extrapolate on what you’re hearing. Jot notes down all the time, especially when reading other people’s work. There’s no way you can write well and often if you’re not reading well and often.

Mechanics Of It All

I keep little text edit files open all over the place. I use Evernote a lot, too. I keep post titles in all of these places, so that when I have a moment or two (it takes me, on average, about 10-15 minutes to write a blog post), I’ll get another one done and schedule it via the editorial calendar plug-in.

It might take you twice or three times as long to get out a post. That’s great. Here’s where I’m finding the time:

  • I don’t watch TV.
  • I don’t read blogs endlessly.
  • I don’t wait in lines without doing two things at a time.
  • I get up before my kids (if I can help it), and write while they’re at school.
  • I don’t do phone calls or meetings if I can help it. If I have to, I keep them VERY brief.
  • I’m trying out Dragon Dictate for the Mac (no review yet).
  • I can type really really fast.

Not all of these will apply to you. Use as many angles as you can. It’s all about determination, habit, and repeat effort.

Absolution

Listen up: you are hereby granted permission to write imperfectly. You are hereby granted permission to write clunkers. You are hereby granted permission to write posts that you don’t think are finished, and push publish anyway.

You heard me. There went all your excuses. Stop it. Just put them out there. Let them live or die on their own. The BEST writers have become the best by having to produce over and over again (often on deadline) without any kind of coddling and with a lot of lumps on the head on the way to greatness.

Need Topics?

You want some blog topics?

100 Blog Topics I Hope You Write

20 Blog Topics to Get You Unstuck

50 Blog Topics Marketers Could Write for Their Companies.

Those are just a bunch I’ve jotted down at some point or another. You can use them as springboards, if you want. You can use them to get your juices flowing. But afterwards, permit yourself no excuses. Just make, and make more. Write, and publish. Get it out the door. Put it on the blog and see what happens.

One Last Thing

If you want a way to give yourself even more to do, find a place where you can write guest posts. Chris Garrett’s book on guest posting (affiliate link) gives you ideas on all that, plus some more writing suggestions. I got a lot of traction for my writing by guest posting elsewhere. I still throw out the random guest post when something is more suited for a different blog than mine. But then again, I write for Dadomatic, Escape Velocity – your second favorite blog, for [chrisbrogan.com], for American Express OPEN Forum, for Entrepreneur Magazine, for Man on the Go, for Third Tribe Marketing, and on my next book with Julien. I’m kind of set for places where I can throw my ideas around.

Any questions? Anything else I can do to help?

My 3 Words for 2010

chrisbrogan · January 1, 2010 ·

3 words mindmap Setting goals is what January 1st is all about. Over the last few years, I’ve practiced something I call “my 3 words,” where I come up with three words that I use as guidance for how I should conduct my efforts in the year to come. I set goals around these three words. I build deadlines and projects around these words. They don’t have to mean anything to you, but the process might prove interesting to you, especially if you’ve found goal-setting difficult in the past.

My 3 Words: Ecosystems, Owners, Kings

I won’t explain my words in detail, because they relate to me. I’ll share a bit and then, we’ll talk about how you set your own.

Ecosystems – Every project I work on has to fit into an existing ecosystem that I’ve created. I’ve got 4 potential buckets for this: me (as in my personal life), CrossTech Group (the parent organization of my company, New Marketing Labs ), CB.C (chrisbrogan.com and related), and Human Business Works (my as yet-to-be unveiled new project, which is picking up steam). If it doesn’t make sense to what I’ve outlined for goals for each of these projects, I’m not doing in 2010.

Owners – One area I could have improved in 2009 was to help people be owners of their projects. In the ecosystems above, that means that I am not empowering people that I work with in various ways, and I seek to help them feel more ownership of what we’re working on.

Kings – You can thank Marsha Collier for this word, because of advice I received one night at dinner with her. She said that I should “be kingly” with regards to managing criticism, and that essentially meant that I needed to maintain poise and balance and charm and demeanor when dealing with life’s unpleasant moments. I’ve thought of that phrase quite often since, and have evolved it to include my business passions, and so it becomes one of my three guiding words for how I conduct myself and business in 2010.

How You Can Set Your Own Three Words

What will your 3 words be? How do you choose?
Pick three words that help you the way a lighthouse helps a ship in a storm. Give yourself a word that guides you towards a powerful new opportunity, and that keeps you focused on what comes of this year. Use these words as starting points for tangible goals, SMART goals that can be measured and have dates to accomplish tasks by. These words sit above the actual goals, and set your guiding principles in place.
The words I use have larger meaning than the word itself. If I put the word “focus” down, it would be more of a reminder of an action, and not exactly a lighthouse upon which to set my goals. In the past, for instance, in 2006, I used the words “Ask. Do. Share.” They helped me get very successful, but they weren’t entirely large enough to be a flexible planning word. So, what I’m trying to do with the words is come up with something that would take more than a sentence to describe, but that when you think about it, the ideas explode out to fill your head with thoughts of how you might want to conduct yourself.
Side note: the new book Julien and I are working on does this in its title to big effect, so you’ll see this thinking echoed a lot in coming months.
I hope you give this some thought and consider sharing your three words here. It’s been very helpful to my success over the last few years, and I predict it’ll help me navigate the complexities of my upcoming 2010, as well.
