I just logged onto Periscope. I did it mostly because Derek Halpern said this. If you love Periscope, read that. Because I don’t love Periscope.
Periscope is Not Interesting To Me
The premise is simple: live video in real time. Okay, cool. Except, it’s not especially useful for my business. It’s INTERESTING, but it’s not USEFUL.
My job: serve the people I serve. My job: figure out marketing and business tools to help you earn more customers via the digital channel.
People are saying to me that they’re seeing increases in their newsletter subscription via Periscope. That’d be interesting to me. HOWEVER, what I observed is that it’s basically a function of asking people to sign up to my newsletter. Verbally. While they type. Or don’t.
Periscope Seems Perfect for Bored People
The people who showed up basically said the same three things: I’m here because I was curious what you’d have to say (mostly, I complained that I didn’t get it and asked people to convince me differently). That was number one. Number two: looking for something to do. Number three: wondering if you had insights about…Periscope.
Maybe I Just Don’t Get It
A “creative” person who has photoshopped his Klout score into his Twitter avatar says that I shouldn’t be dissing it and that I don’t get it. I asked him repeatedly to explain what I didn’t get. That didn’t really happen. Maybe he’ll write a post or something. But I know I won’t get that, either. Because I don’t think Klout’s interesting, either, and he thinks it’s interesting enough to share his avatar photo with it.
I’ve Been Wrong Before
I wrote Google+ For Business. I said some really positive things about that. Yeah, that didn’t work out. (But if it did, I’d have been quite prescient.)
But I’ve Been Right, Too
I was an early adopter of Twitter (user 10,212). I got it right away. I felt like it was a way to wire up the back side of the Internet. I still get value.
REAL TIME VIDEO IS RARELY USEFUL TO US, UNLESS IT’S ***REAL*** NEWS!!!!!
That’s my argument.
No one’s quite convinced me otherwise.
Marketing And Sales
I help people develop the digital side of the business assets. I help with marketing and sales and ways to make more money via the digital channel.
As it relates to what I do and how I advise people, no. Periscope is NOT interesting to me. Not at all.
