My Own Purple Cow

chrisbrogan · May 10, 2006 ·

Seth has this idea about purple cows. If you’re driving past a farm and there are 100 cows, and one of them is purple, which one do you think you’ll remark about after the fact? The dull brown one next to the other dull brown one, of course.
I had a conversation with some of the Advisory Board last night, and they were very convincing about my own personal “secret sauce” being my art and my creativity. I wholly concur. I have some interesting talents that come out in visual form, and I enjoy doing that kind of stuff.
However, I don’t know that it’ll ever really be my vocation. Instead, I think it will always be more like my own Purple Cow than the actual main course of what I’m doing. This is by choice. I probably COULD eke out a living as an artist of some flavor or another, but it goes back to Michael Gerber’s E-Myth Mastery. The BUSINESS of doing something is always different than the talent and passion for doing it. (In a nutshell: just because you love baking doesn’t mean you love or will do good at running your own bakery).
I’m okay with that. I’m happy using my artwork as something adjunct or “on top of” the stuff I pursue day to day.
In fact, the thing I learned from last night’s conversation after a night of really weird dreams, was that I think I’ve been going about this all wrong. I’ve been focusing on the business side of things, instead of designing my new “product” from the creative depths first, and then finding ways to market it thereafter. (More on this later).
So, thanks Advisory Board, and thanks Seth for the mindset. I’ve got my purple cow all figured out. Oh, but also to my Advisory Board friends: I also printed up 30 graphic postcards with advertising on the back, and I’m going to try direct marketing my artwork locally to parents and office drones and see if it takes off.
Purple Cows can still instrument themselves for business.
