It was an interesting experience, having a bunch of negative people show up to see what I’d talk about. They were mostly mad that I said I didn’t like a piece of software that they like. It’s really funny to me. Just because I have an opinion that’s counter to their opinion about a software that neither of us created, I’m a jerk. That’s my first takeaway. People are pretty passionate about Periscope.
My Position Remains Unchanged
My point is that it’s kind of a messy way to build your business. It is effective for what it does. It’s helpful insofar as it lets you build some relationship-like connectivity by showing people your live and wobbly face. And I see the value in the intimacy. But to me, if you have two hours in a day to devote to the online channel for building your business, I’d rank this one last.
I had a few hundred people show up, which was kind of neato. But I had that because I’m “Chris Brogan.” The average person won’t get a lot of people to show up, so it means fewer potential prospects. In SOME businesses, that’s a good thing. You don’t want to try and talk to a thousand people at once. But for lots of people, it means fewer potential prospects.
But Is It Interesting?
Sure. It’s a chance to watch someone live and in real time. It’s a way to see something very unfiltered. If you don’t like a person, you’ll find reasons why not to like them more. If you like them, you’ll enjoy them more. Lots of great opportunities to move an emotional needle further into the territory it already holds.
The Strange Needs of People
The excitement around Periscope seems driven (to me) by a lot of emotional triggers. People want to connect with other people. People want to feel seen. Periscope has a strong sense of “Look! I’m here!” and that’s before I get into the whole “hearts” thing.
Plus, again, people were genuinely HURT that I don’t seem to care much for Periscope. Who cares? My opinion shouldn’t affect your mood. And if it’s working for you, awesome. Why do I have to like it?
I’ll mess around with it a bit more. I have to, in case I’ve missed some magic that the average person can use. But it’s not really my medium.
You can rule Periscope. It’ll be good for you! 🙂
