My son, Harold, found out quite by surprise that he really likes puppets. He pretty much had to have this Kermit the Frog puppet. What we did with it was quite interesting. And in the process, I found myself thinking about me, then you, and about us. About all of us. And about something I’m not sure I’ve yet shared in this specific way.
The Magic of Puppets
When you put a puppet on your hand, you empower someone else to speak for you. You can say things you might not say from your own lips. Because hey, it’s a puppet. Puppets are like a super power.
Puppets permit practice bravery.
(Not the real stuff, but practice bravery.)
What to do with a Puppet
Harold and I took turns being Kermit. We started the way you’d imagine. Crappy Jim Henson imitations. (Actually, I’m kind of good at Kermit, but that’s about it.) We did “hi ho” and we talked about “muppet news flashes” and I regaled Harold with my decades of experience as an avid Muppet Show viewer.
But soon, we were making our own dumb jokes. And we started off dumb, got dumber, and then made a few jokes that sounded a little funnier. To us, at least.
And then, the jokes got real. They became stories. They became truths. They became words from inside of us. And they helped us figure some things out.
Blogs are Puppets
A blog lets you mimic other people’s style. A blog lets you test out communication styles, ideas, language. A blog lets you become a storyteller, then a truth teller, then whatever that next level is where you become real.
As such, blogs are magical tools for the shy, for those who don’t always have the right thing to say on the tip of their tongues or fingers. Blogs are a tool set that let you construct who you are and how you help others, and leanr how to say it in a way that helps other people see themselves in your offering.
And when people are mad at what you’ve written, they can be mad at the blog/puppet. It’s not really you. And when people make you nervous, it’s your blog, not you. For a while.
Until you’re ready to be the voice of you. Until you’re ready to try it in other venues. Until you’re ready to be exactly you and nothing more, nothing less.
Hi ho. It’s you here!
