I got back from my fourth trip out to Social Media Marketing World (run by Mike Stelzner and team) and had a blast. I also came back quite inspired. Though I rail against “social media” quite often these days, I caught the thread of what it should REALLY be doing for us. It’s about making sure you’re out there serving, and part of that, is getting your voice out there to help. If you’re not down for reading, here’s a podcast episode that covers it a slightly different way, but gets the gist of it.
Get Your Voice Out There
I was reminded at this event by my friend Gary Vaynerchuk that the real value, the real opportunity, the VICTORY you can seek, is to use your voice to help others. You can connect and share and help people do amazing things in your world. It wasn’t any specific thing Gary said. It’s the fact that he built a huge media business around himself that continues to generate more and more business opportunities for him and the organization. And I’m not saying to clone what Gary does (you CAN’T be Gary – he’s singularly a force!), but instead, to think about how YOUR voice can serve others.
What do I mean?
You can use whatever tool or tools you want. Blog something. Podcast something. Write a newsletter. Do all of those (I do). Whatever you want. But use the tools to do two things at once:
1.) Share YOUR vision of how you help others change the world.
2.) Change the WORLD by helping others in some way with your voice.
That’s it. Easy.
What Does That Look Like?
In this case, the goal is to serve others in some way. For instance, let’s say your business revolves around helping small towns thrive (that’s what Becky McCray does. So in her case, her voice talks directly to the various ways small towns can do this. How to do pop-up events, how to do street crawls, how to create small town loyalty programs, etc. That’s how you’d use your voice. And in that, you keep doing those two steps above.
Share your vision. Show people HOW.
Where Should You Do This?
Do it where you want to do it. Who cares? The people you serve might be anywhere. Create the media where it most makes sense for YOU. Share it in a few other places. You’ll be okay. They’ll be okay. Remember: no one’s screaming and dying to get your media. They’re out there looking to solve their problem. So the only caveat to “do it where you want” is “make sure Google can find it.” Otherwise, you’re talking to yourself.
Get your voice out there. You have information that others need and can benefit from. Go get it.
And hey, peek at Owner Insider. It’s about to get really cool in there! 🙂
