Several portions of my trip to BlogWorld Expo were worth it, but one of the moments that stands out to me was meeting Gary Vaynerchuk from Wine Library TV. Gary is a FORCE in creating new media. He is a business man, and yet VERY deeply and passionately tied to the community. Gary bleeds human relations, and feels from his gut what is right and wrong. The details of his wine show have been covered everywhere. In fact, most recently, he got written up on CNN. But here are some things for YOU to consider, if you ever want to be like Gary (and why wouldn’t you?)
Be Passionate
Gary could probably sell ANYTHING, and I’d be buying. But he doesn’t. Gary is passionate about wine. He is non-geeky. In fact, he’s non-snobby. He talks about wine like it’s a full contact sport. (Hmm, tell the Jets to get passionate about wine, Gary!)
Be Out There
Gary doesn’t wait around for people to find them. He reaches out. He makes relationships, and he services those relationships. He brings conversations and touches base. He makes sure he’s in the places where the people are. Gary didn’t hit the conference last week. He hit the super swank private party held by the Conversation Group and Share a Sale.
Promote, But Don’t Be That Guy
I really can’t help you here. Gary promotes all the time, but never comes off like an ass. He’s definitely pushing you to see where he keeps the good episodes. Hmm. Maybe that’s it. Gary doesn’t send me EVERYTHING he does. He sends me the good stuff. That Conan piece (too lazy to find it on YouTube) was killer. I love it more than some episodes of Gary’s show.
Be Prolific
Gary, not unlike Christopher S. Penn produce shows all the damned time. Gary even does special shows inside Facebook, and other special projects. He’s all over the place. He’s ubiquitous. Be that. Get your stuff out there such that when people think X, they think you. When I think of wine, I think of this black-haired fireball with his Jets spit bucket. (Yes. I. Do.)
Go Visit
Swing by Wine Library TV and see Gary in action. You can’t escape his charm. I promise.
