I played an hour and 20 minutes of tennis yesterday with a guy from work. We’re both hacks, but we really had some great games. It’s lots of fun, and really works your core. I enjoy it as a great crosstraining exercise for the other stuff I’m doing, and damn, you can really get lots of enjoyment without realizing you’re sweating your head off.
This morning was another 5 miles of biking and then some quick weights at the gym (just some tricep/bicep/shoulder/rotator cuff stuff), and then I hit the swimming pool for a little bit. Bad plan, due to the rotator cuff being fairly integral to that swimming crap. But whatever. I stopped early and hit the hot tub, as the great tennis workout left my back a little ouchy. Did I mention that the chiropractor said something about a smooshed up disk? Whatever. He’s fixing it. The work seems to help.
Eating wise, I’m not doing top shelf, but I’m not eating horrible things. Probably just taking in too many calories. I definitely eat more when stressed. I’m still in the game.
Here’s something to think about for today: before you start whatever workout you’re doing (running or a video or WHATEVER), do you focus on the results you want to achieve? Do you set little goals? Say you’re doing crunches, and you usually get 50 crunches in a row. Try setting a goal to do another 50 after a minute’s rest.
The trick is to have the focuse BEFORE you start whatever workout you planned. If you’re setting up a 30 minute bike ride, maybe you make the focus to stay within a certain gear range throughout the workout (no grannies, for instance). On a run, maybe it’s to keep your target heart rate in focus for the duration.
Now, one last thing: try VISUALIZING yourself successfully accomplishing whatever was that goal you set. Close your eyes and actually see yourself hitting that goal. Add sound to it. Add the internals of what you’ll feel like. Add the ache it might take to get there.
I want to hear back on this. I want you to try it and tell me what you get from the experience. Any time between now and Tuesday next, hit me back with a story about this, would you?
